Panchakarma is often described as a “detox,” but it is far more than that. It is a structured, physician-led process designed to remove deep-seated imbalances and restore the body’s natural intelligence. Here is what actually happens during a classical Panchakarma program.
The preparation phase (Purvakarma)
Before any cleansing begins, the body must be prepared. This involves snehana (internal and external oleation with medicated oils and ghee) and swedana (therapeutic sweating). Together they loosen toxins from the tissues and move them toward the digestive tract, where they can be eliminated.
The main procedures (Pradhanakarma)
Depending on your constitution and condition, your physician selects from the five classical actions โ therapeutic emesis, purgation, medicated enema, nasal therapy and, rarely, bloodletting. These are never applied as a fixed package; the right combination is chosen for you.
The recovery phase (Paschatkarma)
After cleansing, the body is gently rebuilt with a carefully staged diet, rejuvenating herbs and a return to normal routine. This phase is what makes the results last.
Done properly, Panchakarma leaves you feeling lighter, clearer and more energetic โ but its real value is in correcting the root imbalance, not just the symptom.
